How captioning works

When you generate captions, the app uploads your video's audio track — or, in some cases, the video file itself — to SUBTL's servers (api.subtl.cc) solely to produce a transcript with word-level timing. Speech-to-text is performed by a third-party transcription provider(listed under "Where data is processed" below), which processes the audio on our behalf under contract and is bound to equivalent data protections.

Uploaded media is transient. Your audio and video files are deleted from our servers after processing completes. They are not stored, archived, shared, or used to train models.

We may retain the caption text produced for your video, and edits you make to captions, to measure and improve transcription quality (a corrections dataset). This is text only — it never includes your video or audio.

Your projects stay on your device

Apart from the transient upload described above, your projects, videos, and exports live only on your device. There is no cloud sync, and no copy of your library exists on our servers. Finished videos are exported directly to your device's Photos library.

Accounts

You can use SUBTL without an account. Signing in with Apple or Google is optional and is needed only to generate captions on our servers, which are metered per account. When you sign in, we store your name, email address, and a provider identifier so we can recognise your account. Signing in does not upload your videos or sync your projects.

You can delete your account from within the app at any time. Deletion removes your account and the server-side data associated with it.

Analytics

We use PostHog (hosted in the European Union) for first-party product analytics. It captures anonymous usage events — for example, which features are used — to help us improve the app, and is on by default. It never includes your video, audio, or caption text, is not used to track you, and is never shared for advertising. You can turn analytics off at any time in the app's Data & Privacy settings.

No ads, no tracking, no selling

SUBTL shows no ads, uses no advertising trackers, does not access the advertising identifier (IDFA), and does not track you across other apps or websites. We do not sell or rent your personal data to anyone.

Where data is processed

• SUBTL servers — hosted on Amazon Web Services in the ap-south-1 (Mumbai, India) region. Handles transient media uploads, caption generation, accounts, and retained caption text.
• Sarvam AI — third-party speech-to-text; receives the audio to transcribe it.
• PostHog (EU) — first-party product-analytics events, hosted in the European Union.

Data we may process, summarised

• Audio (or video) from your project, transiently, to generate captions — deleted after processing.
• Caption text and your caption edits, retained to improve caption quality.
• Name, email, and provider identifier — only if you sign in.
• Anonymous product-analytics events (on by default, can be turned off in Settings).
• Standard, non-identifying diagnostics needed to keep the service running.

Payments

SUBTL offers an optional auto-renewing subscription, SUBTL Pro. Purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store — we never see or store your payment details. We record only whether your account has an active subscription, so the app can unlock Pro features. See our Terms of Service for subscription pricing and renewal terms.

Children

SUBTL is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13; if you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights & deletion

You can delete your account — and the server data associated with it — directly in the app. You can also request access to, correction of, or deletion of your data by emailing kabilanvennila@gmail.com.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
